Portfolio: Mixed Media

In Search Of, No. 15.  This Mixed Media artwork is one of a group (or subset) within the Series, In Search Of  (see art above).   The group is projected to include at least a dozen or more pieces, when complete.  Like the piece above, they all deal with the search to colonize a new planet,  to eventually replace earth.  There are spectrums to consider which could suggest that this subset expand beyond what is envisioned at this point.  Once complete as a group, it may be exhibited in a public setting (such as NASA) before it is moved from this Portfolio to the Purchase-Gallery on this website.

In Search of the Soul, No. 7.  This Mixed Media artwork is a part of a Series that is growing in the 2016-2017 timeframe.  In the art world, the subject of an individual’s search is characterized as a self-indulgent journey.  In this Series, however, the artist is on a different tack, the more general  statement of the human condition.  While there is diversity in perspective on the alignment of mind and body, emotions and spiritual integrity,  the concept of symmetry with the world is a contiguous underlying current. When there appears to be asymmetrical forces at work, some might suggest there is spiritual dysfunction. — many fixed paradigms on the concept of soul.  We often see the soul depicted in art through the eyes of an individual — haunting, provocative, introspective.  Mystery and mythology surrounded the subject across time and cultures, philosophies and religions.  Early Christian philosophers borrowed the Greek conceptualization of a soul,  created by a God that is adorned into the body at conception,  and remains immortal.  In  Hinduism, the soul is a universal self, and all individuals drink from the well, as it were.  North American Indian tribes wove the concept of soul as a spiritual concept as a dominant influence in their culture.  The soul, it remains an eternal search.

Form & Content No. 32.  This Mixed Media piece is predominantly an opaque and transparent watercolor with limited pastel accents.  As one of group within the subset of the Series,  Form & Content,  the intent is to complete a group of mixed media pieces structured around the concept of this “lead-piece,”  this, before placing them all in the Purchase-Gallery here on the website.  Several subsets within this Series have been executed in the past as much as  5 to 10 years apart — where the mindset of the artist changed as compared to the earlier work.  The artist often revisits a Series, and Form & Content Series is a good example.  This Series has over 60 pieces executed, but many have not been organized and cataloged.  In some cases, and this is especially true in this situation,  the artist has held back artwork to organize his thoughts on the consistency of the work based on the original intent.  He has destroyed some pieces that were felt to be inconsistent in one way or another.   Nevertheless, he will be placing a new grouping of pieces in the Purchase-Gallery sometime later in the year.

Architectonics No. 25.   This Mixed Media work would appear to be a point of departure from those featured in the Purchase-Gallery.  However, it rests comfortably within the artist’s Series, Architectonics.  This Series is has evolved from the it’s early infancy in the mid-1970s.  It is not a very large or broad Series to date, but the artist’s intent is to grow it; examining both simple and complex ideas. The architect/artist is like a mirage, caught in a mixed metaphor.  This piece and others have hung in the artist’s studio as a point of reference — and several are also some older pieces now in the Purchase-Gallery.  These pieces have been exhibited as part of juried exhibitions in many cases, but not being made available for purchase.  The Series emphasizes the cohesive themes of space, time, form & function, visual design, light and texture.  It is highly derivative from architectural concepts, as you’d anticipate.  This Series will remain open, revisited by the artist from time to time, never complete.
